Why does the gun found in the lake matter?

The Luger pistol found in Lake Annecy is being treated as a concrete new clue in the al-Hilli family murders, which have remained unsolved in France since 2012. France’s cold case unit confirmed that the weapon recovered from the water near the scene has been added to the investigation.

One of the few points established so far in the case is that Saad al-Hilli, his wife, his mother-in-law and a passing cyclist were shot in the head, and that the weapon used was identified as a Luger P06 model. That conclusion was reached thanks to fragments of the pistol grip found at the scene; the model is known to have been used by the Swiss army until around 1960.

Where was the weapon found?

According to Marianne magazine, the gun was found on August 20 by British tourists at a depth of about two metres in the lake. The tourists initially thought the object was a water pistol, but realised it was a real gun when they noticed how heavy it was.

The discovery was made near the Le Solitaire du Lac campsite, where the family had stayed in a caravan. Forensic experts are now trying to determine whether the badly damaged weapon, after spending years underwater, is indeed a P06 model.

What happened in 2012?

British citizen Saad al-Hilli, who was born in Iraq, was on holiday with his family around Lake Annecy in eastern France. On the afternoon of September 5, 2012, the bodies of al-Hilli, his wife and his mother-in-law were found in their car, with the engine still running, on a forest road near the village of Chevaline.

The couple’s two daughters survived the attack. The seven-year-old child was injured in the head by the pistol grip, while the four-year-old girl remained hidden under her mother’s skirt and was not spotted until crime scene teams began work.

What theories are still being considered?

Extensive investigations in France and the United Kingdom over the years have failed to establish who carried out the attack or why. Among the possibilities considered are a family financial dispute, a random attack and the theory that the cyclist may have been the intended target.

Why is the Luger P06 drawing attention?

The P06 is estimated to have been produced in about 60,000 units and is now seen mainly as a collector’s weapon. With Lake Annecy located about 50 kilometres from the Swiss border, investigators have long considered the possibility that such weapons may have been kept in families on both sides of the frontier.

Although total Luger production is estimated at around 3 million, forensic experts are still waiting for the results of the examination to determine whether the recovered gun is directly linked to the case. Earlier in the investigation, authorities also briefly examined whether al-Hilli’s wife’s first American husband had died of a heart attack in France hours before the murders.
