What did the NASA study actually measure?
The question of whether houseplants clean the air traces back largely to NASA’s 1989 report, Interior Landscape Plants for Air Pollution Abatement. The study was designed to examine how plants affected volatile organic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. It was carried out in partnership with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America.
Why were sealed test chambers important?
The experiments were conducted in small, airtight chambers rather than in a real living room or office. The aim was to observe plants’ effects on pollutants without other variables getting in the way. Under those conditions, a noticeable drop in pollutant levels was reported within a day.
Why can’t those results be applied directly to real homes?
The key difference between the lab and everyday life is airflow. In a real home, windows are opened, doors are used, mechanical systems come into play and pollutant levels constantly change. For that reason, the effect measured in a chamber may not appear at the same speed or scale in normal living spaces.
What did the 2019 reanalysis find?
Michael Waring and Bryan Cummings re-evaluated 196 experimental results from 12 published chamber studies spanning roughly 30 years, converting them into air-cleaning rates. Their findings were published in 2019 in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology. The researchers concluded that natural and mechanical air exchange in buildings dilutes volatile organic compounds far faster than plants can remove them.
What the numbers suggest
According to the reanalysis, it could take 10 to 1,000 potted plants per square meter to match the effect of a ventilation system or a few open windows. That does not mean plants are useless; it simply shows they may not be a practical stand-alone air-cleaning solution.
What really determines indoor air quality?
Ventilation stands out as one of the most important factors in indoor air quality. Fresh outdoor air, reducing pollution sources and keeping up with maintenance can often deliver more direct results than potted plants alone. Especially when new furniture, paint, cleaning products and poor air exchange come together, volatile organic compounds can become more noticeable.
What can be done for a healthier home environment?
- Provide regular ventilation and, if possible, do not neglect maintenance of mechanical systems.
- Try to reduce sources of pollution such as paint, cleaning products, smoke and similar contaminants.
