How were the vulnerabilities in the Polygon PoS network fixed?

Polygon said it closed security vulnerabilities in its proof-of-stake network that could have caused outages and increased resource usage for validators through the Austin and Kyoto hard forks it recently activated. According to an update from Polygon Labs on Thursday, the fixes were first deployed privately, tested and then activated on mainnet.

The statement said the issues affected the Bor and Heimdall clients. The company said details were shared with the public only after the patches were in place and that, so far, it has found no evidence the vulnerabilities were exploited on mainnet.

What were the most critical risks and who was affected?

The most serious vulnerability was reported on the Heimdall side. According to the company, a specially crafted transaction could have forced validators to process an unusually high number of operations, creating a load that could disrupt the network's normal functioning.

The Austin hard fork targeted two separate denial-of-service risks in the Bor client. These issues were said to have the potential to slow block processing or cause nodes to crash.

  • Bor v2.10.0 is required for all Polygon PoS nodes.
  • Heimdall v0.11.0 is mandatory for validators and full nodes.

According to Polygon, nodes still running older versions after the hard fork activation heights had already fallen out of consensus. For these systems to rejoin the canonical network, they must complete the required upgrades.

What does the POL price and market picture show?

That the security patches were rolled out as a preventive measure rather than after an attack stands out from a network-continuity perspective. Reducing technical risk is operationally important for the Polygon ecosystem in terms of preserving transaction flow and ensuring validators can operate smoothly.

According to CoinGecko data, Polygon's native token POL was trading at about $0.10 at the time of writing.

Although short-term performance has been weak, the asset is down 4% over the past week and up 44% over the past month. Its year-to-date gain was also recorded at 2.3%.
