Shares come under pressure despite beat on earnings

Marvell shares have dropped more than 11% in the past five trading sessions after the company announced its second-quarter results on August 27. Although the semiconductor company beat expectations on both revenue and profit, helped by the artificial intelligence theme, investors judged the short-term margin outlook to be weaker.

Market data showed that the main driver of the selloff was a tighter near-term profitability outlook. As a result, the strong headline numbers in the earnings report did not translate into the same level of share performance, highlighting once again the two-sided impact of elevated volatility during earnings season.

Option pricing and historical patterns do not line up

An analysis from Barchart said the option market's volatility curve ahead of earnings pointed to a more cautious stance. The same assessment also raised the possibility of a short-lived rebound, and a August 21 212.50/220-dollar bullish call spread was cited as a trade that ended with full profit.

  • Over the past 10 weeks, only 3 weekly candles closed in positive territory.
  • The same quantitative signal has been seen 37 times since January 2019.
  • After this signal, the stock reached the equivalent of the 220-dollar level in the second week 18 times and in the third week 17 times.

Probability estimates show a notable gap

The analysis said the breakeven level for the September 18 215/220-dollar bullish call spread was $217.30. Based on the historical framework, the probability of breakeven in the second and third weeks was calculated at 56.8%, while Wall Street's standard option-pricing mechanism implied a probability of 41.8%.

The model derived from expected-move calculations also showed a 35.69% chance of the stock reaching the 220-dollar strike price by expiration. The picture suggests that the options market remains cautious on the near-term direction, while the historical data-based approach is relatively more optimistic.

Margin outlook will be the key focus for the market

The core distinction in the analysis centers on whether the price action will be random or shaped by institutional investors stepping back in after the sharp drop in recent weeks. For Marvell, the next key market driver will remain how the post-earnings margin outlook is updated and how much artificial intelligence-related semiconductor demand feeds through to revenue growth.
