Jury Finds Apple Infringed Two Patents
In the Apple patent infringement case heard in the United States, a jury sitting in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California concluded that the company used two patents belonging to San Diego-based Taction Technology without permission. Under the ruling, Apple must pay more than $5.7 billion.
At the center of the case is the vibration feedback system users feel when they receive notifications or press a button. The jury found that the iPhone maker used Taction’s patented technology in this area. However, it rejected the claim that the infringement was willful.
What Technology Is at the Heart of the Case?
The dispute concerns haptic feedback technology, which creates a tactile response in devices. In a statement after the ruling, Apple argued that its own Taptic Engine system is fundamentally different from Taction’s technology and that this was also shown by tests conducted during the trial.
- The case covers feedback technology that users feel as vibration.
- While the jury found two patents had been infringed, it rejected the claim of willful infringement.
The Case Began in 2021, and the Appeal Opened the Door Again
The legal battle began in 2021 when Taction sued Apple. In 2023, a federal judge ruled that Apple had not infringed the patents. But an appeals court revived the case last year, and the process continued until the jury verdict.
Taction had argued that Apple benefited from its innovations without obtaining a license or authorization. After Friday’s jury decision, the company’s lawyer said the ruling affirmed patent rights. Apple, meanwhile, said it plans to appeal.
Timing of the Ruling and Market Reaction
The decision came at a time of leadership change at Apple. In September, John Ternus became CEO, replacing Tim Cook, who had led the company for 15 years. Apple is also facing debate over claims that it has lagged behind other major tech companies in rolling out artificial intelligence products.
Following the court decision, Apple shares fell by about 2% as trading opened on Monday. The outcome has therefore added pressure on the company not only legally, but also in the market.
