British right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is awaiting deportation. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said an immigration judge issued a final removal order against Yiannopoulos on July 22 after he failed to appear at an immigration hearing.

According to ICE’s detainee locator system, the 41-year-old is being held in Louisiana. In its statement, DHS said the British commentator was detained after arriving at New Orleans airport on Aug. 27.

The department said Yiannopoulos entered the United States in May 2019 and remained in the country after overstaying his lawful period of stay. It said he would remain in custody until deportation proceedings are completed.

Yiannopoulos, who once worked as an editor at Breitbart News and later joined rapper Kanye West’s team, has long been known for his political provocations and controversial remarks. The commentator has presented himself as a provocative political figure, while critics accuse him of spreading hate speech.

His political views and controversies

Yiannopoulos was among the early supporters of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election and spoke at an event held during the Republican National Convention. Although he later appeared to distance himself from the Trump movement, he continued to back some parts of the Republican agenda.

The commentator has repeatedly drawn criticism over past remarks about transgender people, Muslims, the Black Lives Matter movement, feminists and gay people. He is also known for social media posts supporting ICE operations and calling for mass deportations.

In 2017, Yiannopoulos was removed from the program at the conservative CPAC conference, where Trump also spoke, after videos surfaced that gave the impression he was condoning child abuse. He apologized at the time, denied the allegations and argued his comments were being interpreted in the context of his own childhood experiences; he later left Breitbart.
