Search-and-rescue efforts continue

The ferry disaster off the coast of Northern Cyprus has claimed lives. Ünal Üstel, prime minister of the Turkish Cypriot administration in Northern Cyprus, said at least 8 people had died and more than 12 others were still missing.

According to Üstel, there were 259 passengers and 8 crew members on board. After the ferry left Kyrenia and began taking on water, a large-scale search was launched at sea following its sinking.

Turkish authorities also joined the operation. Helicopters and coast guard boats are working in the area, while ambulances are standing by on shore for rescued passengers.

Erhan Arıklı told local media that about 100 passengers had been brought ashore. Details on the condition of the injured and the nationalities of those on board have not yet been confirmed.

The crossing was delayed because of bad weather

According to officials, the privately operated passenger ferry had been scheduled to sail to Turkey on Saturday, but the trip was postponed because of adverse weather conditions. The vessel departed Kyrenia at around 12:30 p.m. local time.

Speaking to TRT, Üstel said the ferry was struck by two waves. He said the captain tried to regain control after the first wave, but the second wave hit and the ship began taking on water.

Arıklı said on Sunday evening that the ferry had completely sunk. Local television channels aired footage showing people wearing life jackets on top of the overturned hull.

Investigation launched, crew detained

After the incident, the captain and seven crew members were detained as part of an investigation into how the disaster unfolded. Üstel said those found negligent would face legal action.

Boats in the area also joined the rescue efforts. Mustafa Koç, speaking to the BBC, said he had rescued about 65 people with his own boat and described the sea as very rough. He also claimed the ferry had damage at the bow when it arrived in Kyrenia a day earlier.

Filo Denizcilik said it was deeply saddened by the accident involving the passenger vessel it operates. A helpline has also been set up to provide information to passengers' relatives.
