Which areas were hit hardest?

The nor’easter intensified across the U.S. Northeast over the weekend, prompting emergency declarations in New York and New Jersey. Coastal flooding, strong winds and heavy rain affected tens of millions of people, and one person died in Brooklyn after a tree fell on them.

The U.S. National Weather Service said dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds, rough seas and heavy showers were reported Saturday in many places, including New York and Boston. Rain and wind were expected to affect a broad stretch from Virginia to Maine, while the full moon was also seen as a factor that could worsen coastal flooding.

In Surf City and Manasquan on the New Jersey coast, streets and some homes were flooded. The National Weather Service warned that roads in low-lying areas near the shore could go under water and that homes and businesses could be affected.

What happened with outages and transport?

The storm caused widespread power outages across the region. According to PowerOutage data, more than 160,000 households were left without electricity, almost all of them in northeastern states.

In New York, officials warned that wind gusts of up to 86 kilometers per hour over the weekend could bring down trees and power lines. Air travel was also hit hard.

  • According to FlightAware, more than 2,400 flights were delayed on Saturday.
  • Another 1,199 flights were canceled that day.
  • Flooding in coastal areas also disrupted ground transportation.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents, “Do not travel unless you have to.”

Which events were canceled?

The bad weather also disrupted the sports and entertainment calendar. In the Boston area, the final game of the Red Sox-Chicago Cubs series was moved to Sunday afternoon, while the professional soccer match between Red Bull New York and St Louis City SC was canceled.

The Global Citizen Festival planned for Central Park in New York was also called off. The event was expected to feature Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and John Legend, and Ed Sheeran’s concert at Gillette Stadium in the Boston area was also canceled for safety reasons.
