Registrations surged sharply in September
Demand for .si domain names in Slovenia rose far above normal levels in September, according to data from the country’s official registry. Register.si spokesperson Klara Herman said applications climbed from fewer than 2,000 in August to 44,000 in September, a rise of more than 2,100%.
Herman said activity in the final days of the month was on an unprecedented scale compared with the previous 12 months. Internet domain names are the unique addresses people type into a browser to reach websites, and the .si extension represents Slovenia’s country code.
11,000 applications in a single day on Sept. 30
According to the data, 11,000 new .si registrations were made on September 30 alone. Even so, Herman stressed that caution is needed before attributing the entire increase to a single development.
The SI debate is seen as a key driver
The main explanation being discussed is Donald Trump’s use of the phrase “super intelligence” and its abbreviation, SI, in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 11. Trump later signed an executive order on Tuesday instructing U.S. government agencies to use SI and Super Intelligence instead of AI in official correspondence, websites and reports.
Under the order, SI will replace AI not only in official letters but also on websites, in reports and in other forms of communication. The fact that Slovenia’s .si extension uses the same letters is being seen as one reason for the surge in domain interest.
Speculative buying may also be a factor
Another possible explanation is speculative buying, in which people purchase domain names in the hope that they will become more valuable later. In this approach, investors buy addresses they believe may attract demand and later try to sell them at a profit.
- August: fewer than 2,000 .si registrations
- September: 44,000 registrations
- Example: the men.com domain was bought for $15,000 in 1997 and sold seven years later for $1.32 million
In the domain-name market, such transactions are considered a legal form of investment. Whether the latest spike is a temporary wave or a lasting trend is expected to become clearer from application data in the coming months.
