Free support launched in Newent
A baby bank set up in Newent, in Gloucestershire, England, has begun helping families by giving away free baby and children’s items as they face rising childcare costs. The centre, located inside The Ark Cafe, stocks a wide range of products, from baby wipes and breast pumps to hats and swimwear, while larger items such as cots can be collected from a warehouse in Cinderford.
Helen Carter, the centre’s volunteer coordinator, said there is no means test for families who want to use the service. The centre works as a cycle in which parents can take the items they need and also donate clothes and equipment their children have outgrown.
Why does the financial strain after having a baby matter?
The main reason behind the initiative is the growing pressure on household budgets after having a baby. According to the latest National Childbirth Trust (NCT) Parent Experience Report, almost half of parents said they were financially worse off after having a baby. That figure rises to around six in 10 among self-employed, unemployed or part-time working parents.
- Basic items such as new clothes, nappies, formula and wet wipes add to regular spending.
- Free item support can help some families set aside money for social activities with their children.
A mother from Newent visiting the centre for the first time also said children’s clothes and basic care items are expensive. She explained that hand-me-downs from older children can reduce costs somewhat, but for families without that option, everyday expenses become much harder to manage.
Autumn clothes lead the demand
Donated items play an important role at the centre, and volunteers are thanking donors for their local support. Autumn clothing bundles are currently the most requested, while the team is also preparing a Christmas box for later in the year, featuring festive clothes, blankets and shoes.
Volunteer Isabel, who previously received food parcels and clothing support, is now giving back by helping the centre. The baby bank is open every Tuesday from 09:30 to 11:30, providing a regular access point for families in the area.
