A brief history of five long-running awards

Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival

Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival was first held from October 4 to 10, 1964. The festival was founded on the initiative of Avni Tolunay, who was elected mayor in 1963, and its award statuette is known as a Venus figure holding an orange.

The festival’s history also includes interruptions. It was not held in 1979 because of a dispute with the censorship board and the resulting withdrawal of producers and directors, in 1980 because of the September 12 military coup, and in 2023 after debates triggered by the removal of the documentary The Decree from the program.

Adana Golden Boll Film Festival

Adana Golden Boll Film Festival was first held from May 15 to 22, 1969. One of the most frequently cited names among Turkey’s film awards, the festival is regarded as an important benchmark, especially for the visibility of domestic film production.

Istanbul Film Festival and the Golden Tulip

Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) since 1982, the Istanbul Film Festival is followed by both domestic and international film circles. The festival’s top prize, the Golden Tulip, has been awarded since 1985.

Golden Butterfly Awards

The Golden Butterfly Awards, presented since 1972 by the Kelebek supplement of Hürriyet newspaper, are among the most visible awards in television and music. In the first selection, Türkan Şoray and Tarık Akan were named actors of the year, while Perihan Savaş and Kadir İnanır were chosen as the year’s young actors.

Afife Theatre Awards

The Yapı Kredi Afife Theatre Awards have been presented since 1997 in memory of Afife Jale, the first Turkish woman to appear on stage. The first ceremony took place on April 28, 1997, and the awards became one of the platforms that made theatre production more visible in public life.
