Samsung's AI infrastructure commitment grows

Samsung Electronics and its affiliates have announced a combined $1 billion investment plan for AI infrastructure company Helix Digital Infrastructure. Under the deal announced Tuesday, Samsung Electronics will invest $500 million, while the remaining amount will be covered by other companies within the group.

The investment comes as Helix moves to focus both on data center build-out and the energy infrastructure needed to support those facilities amid rising competition in the AI infrastructure market. Founded in June, the company aims to expand the physical infrastructure required by surging demand for artificial intelligence.

Helix's scope is not limited to large-scale data centers. The company also aims to build capacity in areas such as power generation, transmission and distribution systems, as well as fiber-optic networks.

The role of affiliates and Samsung's strategic goal

The transaction allows the Samsung group to bring together capabilities across semiconductors, cooling systems, data center construction and battery solutions under a single investment umbrella. In doing so, the company aims to take on a broader role in global AI infrastructure spending.

Which companies are contributing?

  • Samsung Electronics: $500 million
  • Remaining amount: to be covered by Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance

Samsung said the move will accelerate the rollout of AI data centers worldwide alongside Helix and deepen cooperation among the investing companies.

Helix's investor base and capital scale

Helix is led by Adam Selipsky, the former CEO of Amazon Web Services. The company's founding investors include KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia and U.S.-based energy company Vistra.

According to KKR, Samsung's latest investment will come on top of more than $10 billion previously committed to Helix. The figure underscores the intensifying race for capital aimed at data center and energy infrastructure capable of supporting AI workloads.

KKR has invested more than $75 billion worldwide in digital infrastructure and energy. Since 2009, the firm's investments in Korea have totaled about $9 billion.
