Market rally took center stage in the third quarter

The crypto market went through a quarter in which price performance and security risks grew at the same time. Bitcoin ended the period with a strong gain, despite U.S. Treasury yields rising to their highest levels in more than two decades.

Bitcoin gained 40% by the end of the third quarter, outperforming all major asset classes. One of the main drivers behind the upside was billions of dollars flowing into exchange-traded funds tied to BTC and other tokens.

ETF inflows and moves in altcoins

Source data showed that some altcoins rose even more sharply than Bitcoin over the same period. That picture strengthened analysts' views that a new bull cycle may have begun.

Security breaches reached $1.26 billion in losses

According to CertiK, 247 security incidents were recorded across the crypto ecosystem in the third quarter. Total losses from those cases reached $1.26 billion, while cumulative damage since the start of the year climbed to $2.68 billion.

September was 2026's worst month

There were 99 separate incidents in September. That marked the highest monthly number of incidents since February 2025, while the $768.5 million stolen that month was the largest monthly loss of 2026.

Why did institutional flows remain resilient?

According to Sondergaard, these losses are having only a limited effect for now compared with the billions of dollars entering the market through ETFs. The main reason is that many institutional investors access crypto mainly through regulated and familiar investment products, while staying away from decentralized finance protocols.
