Tight timeline begins for crypto firms

A new regulatory window has opened in the United Kingdom for crypto applications. With the process tied to a February 2027 deadline, companies have about five months to complete their applications.

The timeline is putting the pace of preparation in focus, especially for firms entering the new system for the first time. By contrast, companies already inside the existing registration regime at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) may already have a significant part of their application files in place.

According to the source text, the FCA’s current registration regime has been shaped largely around anti-money laundering requirements. As a result, companies approved under that system may already have completed some of the basic preparations needed for the new framework.

That could create a clear split in readiness among market players. For companies that already have registration, the administrative burden in the process may be more manageable, while others may need to move faster to keep up with the timetable.

Zumo releases a tool to track regulation

Zumo is one of the companies that received FCA registration in 2021. The Edinburgh-based crypto infrastructure firm has developed the UK Crypto Asset Regulation Tracker, a tool that shows firms what obligations the rules impose and when key regulatory milestones fall.

Nick Jones said the tool was developed by “industry operators.”

In an email statement, Jones, Zumo’s founder and CEO, said the company reviewed each obligation in the regulatory package one by one and matched them to the relevant regulated activities. The company also said it keeps that mapping updated as new documents are published.

The development suggests that application preparation and compliance work will move to the top of the agenda for crypto firms in the UK market in the months ahead.
